Svarm – resistance monitoring

To gather knowledge on antimicrobial resistance among bacteria from animals on a national level, the programme Swedish Veterinary Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring (Svarm) was started in 2000.

In the programme, antimicrobial susceptibility of zoonotic bacteria (Salmonella and Campylobacter spp), specific animal pathogens, and commensal enteric bacteria (Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp.) are monitored on a regular basis.

The main objectives are to provide a basis for recommendations on appropriate choice of therapy in veterinary medicine and to detect trends in resistance that might be cause for interventions. Results are presented in the yearly Swedres-Svarm report together with data on consumption of antimicrobial agents in veterinary medicine and with data from the human sector. Several other countries have similar monitoring programmes and compilations on a European level is made by the EU-authorities ECDC, EFSA and EMA, which makes international comparisons of occurrence of resistance and use of antimicrobials possible.
