The Swedish Zoonosis Centre

The Swedish Zoonosis Centre was established in 1997 with the overall task to prevent spread of zoonotic agents, through any part of the production chain, to humans. In accordance with the EU Zoonosis Directive, work with food borne zoonoses is given the highest priority.

The Swedish Zoonosis Council was established the same year as the Zoonosis Centre to ensure a close cooperation between relevant experts from, for example, the veterinary-, human-, and food sector. The Zoonosis Council consists of representatives from the National Board of Health and Welfare, the Swedish Board of Agriculture, the Public Health Agency of Sweden, the National Food Administration, the National Veterinary Institute, Society for Veterinarians at the County Administrative Boards, The Swedish Society for Communicable Disease Prevention and Control.

In practical terms, the Zoonosis Centre is involved in the following tasks:  

  • Collect and analyse data on trends and sources of zoonoses and zoonotic agents. 
  • Initiate and participate in work with control and prevention of mainly food-borne zoonoses. 
  • Conduct epidemiological studies, including risk assessment of  food-borne zoonotic pathogens. 
  • Provide information and advice to the public and to experts concerning prevention and control of zoonoses and zoonotic agents.
  • Initiate and stimulate collaborative research activities with both national and international institutes. 
  • Participate in epidemiological studies on antibiotic resistance in bacteria occurring in animals and food. 
  • Participate in molecular research of pathogens in order to establish subtyping methods, which can be used for tracing routes of transmission for zoonoses.
