Antibiotic use for animals in Sweden

Antimicrobial agents are essential drugs in the veterinary surgeon's arsenal. In Sweden, the use in animals is only allowed on prescription of a veterinarian.

The use is governed by regulations that, among other things, seek to prevent that food contain drug residues. Regulatory agencies are the Medical Products Agency, the Board of Agriculture and the National Food Agency.

Common indications for antibiotic use in food-producing animals are infectious diarrhoea and pneumonia in young animals and mastitis in adult dairy cattle. In dogs, skin and urinary tract infections are common indications. Statistics on sales of antibiotics for animals in Sweden are reported in English in the reports Swedres-Svarm and in Swedish by the Board of Agriculture.
