DisPersal of AntIbiotic Resistance and antibiotics in Water ecosystems and Influence on liveStock and aquatic wildlife

The PAIRWISE project consists of 7 partners from 6 countries and 2 continents which form a team to increase knowledge on dynamics of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) and antibiotics (ATB) in aquatic environments affected by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The overall aims are to understand i) the dispersal of ARB, ARB and ATB in surface waters downstream of WWTPs, ii) the role of surface waters downstream of WWTPs in carriage of ARB and ARB in livestock, iii) the role of aquatic birds in shortand long-distance spreading between aquatic environments. PAIRWISE is a fully integrated project which tackles several of the issues raised in the JPI-Aquatic Pollutants call including, but not limited to: entry points and fate of ARB, ARB and ATB, data needed to identify ARGs and ARB to be used as indicators, providing insight to fate and transport of ARB, ARB and ATB to, within and from aquatic ecosystems, and the role of aquatic birds in these events.
