Title:Researcher, PhD, Associate Professor
Research area :Infectious diseases; Metagenomics; Aetiology; Bioinformatics
Mikael Leijon is a researcher in the Department of Microbiology. His research focuses on the development of new methods for the characterization and detection of microorganisms and the use of these methods to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases in animals.
Another important aspect is to understand when microorganisms found in animals can be transmitted across species barriers, for example to humans in what is called zoonotic infection.
Important tools in this research are deep sequencing of clinical samples and the data analysis of genomic content thus revealed using bioinformatics methods. These new methods have made it possible to better characterize multifactorial infections as well as to detect the presence of completely new or new varieties of microorganisms.
